Benefits of Staying Hydrated for Elderly

We are entering the hotter months of summer.  Always a good time for a reminder on staying hydrated — especially for seniors and aging parents.

It is sometimes difficult to remember to drink (extra) water.  Best time is before you are thirsty.  But the difficulty lies in changing consumption habits and daily routines for the elderly.

Think about this:  the reason almost 50% of the elderly make emergency room visits is because they are mildly dehydrated.   That covers ALOT of people who could overwise remain safe and comfortable in their homes if they simply consumed more water!

Seniors are at a higher risk for dehydation because of their body’s reduced ability to conserve water. In addition, it is more difficult for them to recognize thirst and changing temperatures.  Sometimes these factors are compounded by medications, illness, diabetes, or dementia.

Staying hydrated has a number of benefits including:

  • Helps reduce calorie intake.
  • Keeps muscles properly energized.
  • Helps to maintain the body’s fluid balance.
  • Aids in proper kidney functioning.
  • Helps to maintain normal bowel function.

If you are concerned that a family member or aging parent is not drinking enough water, here are some tips:

  • Carry a water bottle.  It doesn’t have to be a bottled water purchase.  Just a sealed container.
  • Drink a glass of water before each meal.
  • Always request water when dining out.
  • Make your own flavored water.  For example, cut up lemons.

Water intake is very important.  Nutritionists recommend that seniors drink approximately the equivalent of 6-8 bottles of eight fluid ounces.
