Health Resolutions in New Year
The calendar has turned over to the month of January, and a new 2017 year. Many look at this time to change some bad habits, and incorporate newer and better behaviors into daily lifestyles.
Making new year’s resolutions. It’s a time to turn the page, to start over, to take a “mulligan” for all the things that we didn’t do the right way in the past.
The problem is that while resolutions are all well and good, the odds are overwhelming that by February many of us will revert to old customs, and forget about our renewed plan and focus. Like all the Christmas decorations that are now (?) packed away after the holiday season, our lifestyle gradually begins to return to “business as usual” for most of us.
So, what can you do to improve the odds when it comes to your health? How can you stick to your new plan?
Here are some tips to consider:
— Make your goals realistic, and easily attainable. Saying, for example, that you will look to reduce your cholesterol level, means more than saying you’re going to drop it 60 points. (Remember the differences between high/good (HDL) and low (LDL) cholesterol.)
— Look to make incremental changes over a specific time period. Rather than saying “I’m going to lose 60 pounds,” shoot to lose 10 pounds by April 1st. Small, positive steps will show results and reinforce the plan.
— Start small, with areas you can confidently achieve. Many people quit because they become quickly overwhelmed by the goals they’ve set for themselves. Don’t shoot for the moon – getting off the ground is more important.
