Early Detection for Alzheimer’s
Doctors and scientists stress the early detection of Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias to increase treatment options and slow its progression. Now, new technologies are detecting Alzheimer’s earlier than ever before.
Many people shy away from an early diagnosis because Alzheimer’s and dementia are not treatable. So many elders simply ignore symptoms, and hope they go away. This is an understandable response to cognitive and memory issues.
However, any early detection can help mitigate stress by addressing the “unknown”. Detection also allows families time to process the diagnosis and plan. And it clarifies for caregivers the elderly symptoms they may be dealing with.
According to the Alzheimer’s Association, early detection of cognitive impairment offers a wide range of benefits for people with dementia, their caregivers, their families and their team of doctors. These benefits include:
— A better, more clear report of symptoms and concerns
— More time to plan for the future and understand care options
— A greater ability to participate in clinical trials that fight Alzheimer’s
— More time for family and loved ones to understand the disease and plan the future
— Increased choice of medications that can address symptoms
