Lifestyle Choices Can Effect Cognitive Health
Came across this information recently. While rather basic, some of the following lifestyle choices have actually been found to lower the risk of dementia. Part of the message is simple…be good to yourself!
— Eat a healthy diet. Try to choose a balanced diet that includes healthy fats (no trans fats), fruits, vegetables and whole grains. This diet is also commonly recommended for good heart health.
— Get enough exercise. Many researchers will tell you that physical activity is the No. 1 way to protect your brain. So sign-up and take an exercise class, get outside for a walk, or go to the gym. Every bit of exercise will help muscle tone, energy levels, and stress relief.
— Give your brain a workout. Take a local history class, or finally learn to play that instrument you’ve been talking about for years. Numerous studies show that mental stimulation helps protect against cognitive decline.
— Quit smoking. A very difficult proposition for many. But the health benefits for lungs, heart, and blood flow are immense. Best to consult with your primary care physician about a programmed approach to smoking cessation.
