Elder Lifestyle Effects Health

Continuation from last week’s blog entry…there are many healthy lifestyle habits which can assist our aging parents both physically and mentally.

— Get enough sleep. Sophisticated brain imagery is helping experts understand how important sleep is for warding off dementia. Sleep strengthens the memories we form during the day, and sleep is the time when the brain cleanses itself of unhealthy substances.

— Fall-proof your home. Install grab bars where needed. Remove walkway obstacles, including throw rugs. Wear sturdy shoes for ankle and foot support. Falls can cause broken bones and brain injury. Even if a head injury seems to heal successfully, it can raise the risk of dementia in later years.

— Seek professional help. Many families find it difficult to understand aging parents who may be dealing with memory impairment or alzheimer’s, loneliness, or depression. A counselor who has experience with the elderly aging process can help identify some common traits of seniors.

— Stay socially connected. Loneliness and isolation can be stressful for the elderly. Remaining active with others is healthy. Think about hosting a weekly card game, or even a gathering for a weekly tv show or movie night. A morning or evening walk with a neighbor. Or visit a local Council on Aging for senior related events and activities.
