Veteran Administration Aid & Attendance Pension Benefits

Pension Provides Financial Assistance

The federal arm of the Veteran Administration provides financial assistance for qualifying veterans (or surviving spouses) through the Aid and Attendance pension benefit. It is intended for those requiring help with routine tasks, or two or more “activities of daily living.”  The recipient can receive private care while living at home — or in an assisted living facility — or nursing home.

The VA’s Aid and Attendance Pension program is not new; to the contrary, it’s been legislated for decades. It can be applied to fees in any assisted living or Alzheimer’s care residence, as well as private home care.

Aid and Attendance, while tied to the veteran’s military service history, is not restricted to the veteran, and may also include a surviving spouse.  It is a monthly pension benefit for non-service connected disabilities.  The pension assistance is tax-free.

There is no age limit/requirement for war-time veterans, except that they have honorably served their country in a time of conflict. With four different application claim categories (dependent on veteran and marital status), the highest benefit could pay as much as $2,500/month for two married veterans in a qualifying veteran household.
