Older Women’s Health
Recommendations for overall good health remain pretty much the same throughout life. But, an elderly female should make a determined effort to take specific steps to manage health and aging.
Here are some steps which should become lifestyle habits.
Keep up with your health screenings. For senior women, this includes regular bone density testing, colonoscopies, and tests for blood pressure, cholesterol and blood sugar. Annual hearing and vision tests are recommended. Also, add a regular visit to a dermatologist for skin screening. Your physician will undoubtedly advise about mammograms and cervical cancer screenings.
Improve your diet. Older women also should pay special attention to getting enough bone-healthy calcium in their diets. Generally, nutritional recommendations are about the same for all elderly adults: healthy foods, in the right amount to promote a healthy weight. Weighing too much or too little raises the risk of health problems. Every calorie should be a nutrient-rich one. Limit your alcohol intake.
Get enough physical activity. Studies show women need more, not less, exercise as they grow older. Regular physical activity reduces the risk for a host of health problems. But, exercise should be tailored to abilities and age. Talk to your doctor about your exercise program. Does it cover aerobic, muscle-strengthening and balance activities?
