November is National Family Caregivers Month

November is National Family Caregivers Month. We want to acknowledge ALL the dedicated family, and private-duty caregivers for their involvement in the lives of community elders.

Family caregivers’ responsibilities can be challenging. There are times it may seem overwhelming. Whether you are a caregiver now or may be in the future, here are some of the many benefits provded by these dedicated caregivers:

— Downsizing and decluttering: Having too much “stuff” can be an impediment when people want to relocate or get health care in their homes. Homecare staff will assist on decluttering and downsizing. It is important to remember that, for many, holding on to “stuff” is very important. Everyone in the household should be involved in the decluttering effort. Work on clearing one tiny area at a time. Try to store important papers electronically.

— Making cents of caregiving costs: Yes, for professional staff, elder home care is an expense for elderly parents and their safety and security. Think and plan carefully. Budgeting for housing and transportation costs should be reviewed. Finding any additional resources can help plug some gaps in homecare.

— Navigate for dementia care: Dementia is harder for families to care for than any other illness. Unfortunately, many families often don’t plan ahead for this and wind up in a cycle of stress and crisis. Dementia caregiving is unique and challenging. The objective being to help elderly parents maintain the best possible quality of life. Communication between family and care staff needs to be strong.
