Veterans and Spouses: Aid & Attendance Pension Benefit, part 6
There are actually four different application categories for Aid & Attendance. Dependent on veteran and marital status, the highest benefit could pay as much as $2,700/month for two married veterans in a qualifying veteran household.
The high cost of medical and non-medical expenses associated with long term care such as home care, assisted living or nursing home care are usually the triggers that allow medical deductions to qualify a veteran household for pension. Many seniors do not know about eligibility criteria which may allow them to meet the income test. Or, they simply do not currently need assistance with activities of daily living.
Myth # 13: I currently receive a monthly pension through Aid & Attendance. Can I expect my monthly pension to increase?
Answer: Very possibly in future years. The Aid & Attendance benefit, in all eligibility categories, is tied to increases in social security. Last year in 2024, the benefit increased approximately 3.2%, as did social security.
Myth # 14: I am spending down my savings at an alarming rate. This pension benefit will make up the difference.
Answer: No, this is incorrect. There are very clear eligibility guidelines for Aid & Attendance pension benefits. Your financial situation, specifically assets (ex., stocks & bonds) and income (ex., other pensions, social security income, etc.) will be documented upon application. You may be spending down your savings, but other factors will also be examined.
Myth # 15: Living in assisted living will disqualify me.
Answer: No, not at all. As a matter of fact, the cost of your monthly payment for assisted living may help you to qualify for Aid & Attendance.
