Reduce Cholesterol
High cholesterol levels put seniors at greater risk of heart disease and stroke. According to the American Heart Association, it’s important for seniors to take steps to keep their cholesterol levels under control. Elderly parents, and their caregivers, can reduce cholesterol by eating foods which help the body process cholesterol.
Here are some cholesterol-friendly food items to improve nutrition and diet:
• Fish • Lean Meats • Fruits • Olive Oil • Nuts • Legumes • Oats
Importantly, there are also many easy ways to prepare, “grab and go”, low-cholesterol snacks and food items that we all should consume. For example, pre-cut veggies like carrots or celery sticks are filling, nutritious, and low in cholesterol; fruits like apples, oranges, or grapes are convenient and tasty; nuts and seeds are easy to snack on, fibrous, and reduce cholesterol; and fruit-based muffins or bread satisfy cravings for soft baked goods minus all the shortening.
The following food items should be minimized, or avoided, in order to improve heart health. For many, a subtle change to diet and food consumption will help lower cholesterol. Try to avoid, or minimize, these items:
• Red meat
• Dairy
• Packaged Baked Goods
• High Sodium Snacks
• Shortening
• Vegetable Oils
• Fried Foods
