Elderly Prefer to Age at Home
What is widely viewed as the best and most viable delivery of health care in America? The answer…approximately 90 percent of infirm and elderly individuals have been found to prefer home care over comparable institutional care.
No surprise here. Elderly parents value aging in place, at home. Here they are comfortable, have memories and momentos to look at, and can sleep in their preferred bed.
Home care agencies, in general, provide non-medical assistance for seniors at home. Keeping elders safe, comfortable. Helping with some household chores, whether it may be meal preparation or laundry. And, providing some socialization in the midst of, for many, the isolation of living alone.
There is another positive trend in home health care: more and more medical businesses are incorporating in-home medical care services delivered to elderly patients in their home.
Home care and living assistance is delivered – as you would expect – at home. Dorothy, the character in The Wizard of Oz, said it best: “There’s no place like home.” Certainly, this is a statement that most people would wholeheartedly agree with. There is nothing like the comfort and familiarity of being cared for in the comfort and familiarity of one’s own home. Seniors value their homes. Like all of us, they also have an ingrained road map with the physical layout of the home…how the hallway leads into the kitchen; the width of the stairway; how to get in and out of certain chairs, or the living room couch. A new physical location can cause confusion, anxiety, depression, and frustration.
It is important to enable our elderly parents to age in a place of comfort and safety. The practical and logical location is …at home.
