Defining Home Care, part 1
Offering companionship, transportation, and assistance with daily activities, homecare services are provided to seniors in the comfort and familiarity of their own homes.
Homecare is a great alternative to living alone and unsafe. Or, in assisted living facilities for seniors who would prefer to age at home. In addition, homecare can offer family caregivers a break, especially if they are also working or have other obligations.
Homecare is easy to customize based on a elder’s needs and lifestyle. For example, if your elderly parents are social, regular transportation to events and activities can be organized as part of the caregiver’s routine. For individuals who prefer to stay in, caregivers can offer companionship by having conversations, playing games, or helping to cook meals.
The level of care provided will vary based on an individual’s needs. It is important to note that nursing care isn’t included in homecare. This is where assisted living and homecare can differ — many assisted living facilities have health care professionals on staff or on call. Home health care can be ordered by a doctor, but it is a different service from homecare.
It’s important to consider how many hours of care is needed for your elderly parents. My parents needed help in mornings, and evenings. But during middle of the day, they were generally fine.
