Holiday Gifts for Elderly

You are stumped for gift ideas for your elderly parents. Dad has early onset of alzheimer’s. Mom is simply slowing down, with much less mobility and showing cognitive decline.

Here are some ideas for holiday gift shopping…

Magazines and Books:

Is there a favorite magazine subscription that might bring a wide smile? Perhaps a gardening magazine with strong visuals. Any favorite reading material can be a wonderful gift. Also, music is wonderful for seniors.

Finally, as a resource, the Alzheimer’s Association recommends “The 36-Hour Day” by N.L. Mace and P.V. Rabins; “The Best Friends Approach to Alzheimer’s Care” by V. Bell and D. Troxel.

DVD’s or Digital Video Recorder (DVR):

A set or series of favorite TV programs to watch in a quiet moment. Again, allow the visual clues to be received by your elderly parents in a quiet, peaceful setting. Perhaps a series on world history. What were their interests? Cooking? Travel? Documentaries? (My favorite recommendation…any Ken Burns production.)
