No need to panic. Knowledge and understanding are key to managing dementia, so here are helpful tips about recognizing the signs and symptoms from Home Care Partners.
The common signs and symptoms of dementia:
Keep an eye on any of these symptoms if they start occurring in your elderly family member, repeatedly and with increasing frequency:
• Becoming confused and taking longer to react to questions and routine conversations
• Experiencing more-than-usual memory loss than expected in an older person
• Sudden displays of poor judgement in performing routine tasks like cashing a cheque or paying bills or doing tax returns
• Sudden difficulty in finding the right words, speaking clearly, understanding and expressing thoughts, or reading and writing
• Going to a familiar place like a shopping mall or library and then forgetting the location and relationship to the location, ‘where am I?’ ‘why am I here?’
• Asking the same question over and over again, despite getting the answers, forgetting immediately
• Slowing down and taking longer to bathe or dress and staring blankly at objects while performing routine tasks, like making coffee in the morning
• Becoming moody and withdrawn, not taking interest in family interactions and preferring to be alone
• Becoming delusional and imagining things which have never happened, like ‘there is someone walking through my room at night’
• Beginning to walk unsteadily and falling because of lack of balance and unsteady gait.
