How to spot Stroke Symptoms in a Senior, pt 1
Every 40 seconds, someone in the United States has a stroke. Every 3 minutes and 30 seconds, one of them dies from it. There’s no better time to learn how to spot the warning signs of stroke, especially if you love an older adult.
How do you spot stroke symptoms in a senior?
Stroke is the fifth leading cause of death in the U.S. and a leading cause of long-term disability. Seniors are at significantly higher risk, but stroke is treatable. The faster you act when someone shows the symptoms, the better the outcome. Minutes genuinely matter. Understanding the signs could be the difference between full recovery and permanent disability, or even between life and death.
Why are seniors more vulnerable to stroke? Several factors make older adults more susceptible to stroke. The most common underlying causes include high blood pressure (the biggest risk factor), atrial fibrillation (an irregular heartbeat that can cause dangerous blood clots), high cholesterol, diabetes, obesity, smoking, and a history of prior strokes or “mini-strokes” called transient ischemic attacks (TIAs). Many seniors have several of these risk factors at once, which compounds their overall risk.
